A hand formed silver face mask is created then embellished with various shapes creating a fun and interesting piece.
The piece is 3 dimensional with character and embellishments all around. On the back, I have my personal lotus symbol signature to let the buyer know it’s one of my own original pieces
Masks for Mardi Gras are the most distinctive and memorable aspects of this celebration. As far back as Roman times, decorative masks were part of the carnival atmosphere of pagan festivals such as Saturnalia and Lupercalia, and when the modern Mardi Gras celebrations began to develop in medieval Europe, this tradition was kept alive.
This pendant is hand shaped using PMC3 Pure Silver Clay. My work is then embellished, filed, sanded, and refined. Once they are to my liking, I fire them in my kiln where the clay binder burns off and the pure silver metal is left. From there I polish and patina them for effect.
I then fused silver elements onto the mask into which I laid down the enamel colors. First, several layers of base enamel are fused to the pendant. From there vibrant enamel is painted onto the base and fired in my kiln at 1450 degrees Fahrenheit. This process is repeated several times until the desired effect is achieved.
Hung on a 16″ box chain, it is ready to wear. The pendant measures 3/4″ wide x 1″ tall
This piece was inspired from a Craftcast class by Joy Funnell who introduced this concept of masks as jewelry.
